FRATELLI MANCIOLI
Fratelli Mancioli is an artist duo from Rome formed by Isabella (1988) and Bernardo Mancioli (1992), sister and brother. They work across photography, moving image and visual design. Both trained at the Quasar Institute in Rome. Isabella studied graphic design and visual communication, has worked for over ten years as a graphic designer and art director, and has a parallel background in film editing. Bernardo specialised in reportage photography at the Scuola Romana di Fotografia e Cinema and works on film on long-term projects.
They always work as a pair and start from interviews. They choose communities that already have a strong image of themselves and, after the questions everyone expects, they ask others, simple but unusual, the kind that probably no one has ever been asked. There is no ready answer: the person speaking has to find it on the spot, going a little by instinct. From the voices they collect come a short video and a body of photographs on film.
In 2026 they were in residence in Slon, a village in sub-Carpathian Romania, for the European network Magic Carpets (Creative Europe), with Latitudo Art Projects and META Cultural Foundation, curated by Georgiana Buț. There they made the two videos on show. Ei se mișcă [They Move] brings together the voices of the village children answering imaginative questions, accompanied by an adult voice in Romanian wondering what it means to set the imagination free. Asta este [That’s How It Is] gathers the voices of the villagers as they remember their childhood. They all speak at once, then one by one they fall away, and the easier it becomes to understand them, the less they have to tell. During the residency they also ran a cyanotype workshop with the children, which produced a herbarium that has stayed in Slon.
Earlier works include Chuño y Mote (Bolivia, 2024-2025), a short documentary and film photography reportage made with the cholitas luchadoras of La Paz. At the Indie Short Fest in Los Angeles the film won Best Documentary Short in the November 2025 monthly edition and was a finalist in the annual edition. It also won Best Cinematography at the San Diego Independent Cinema Awards, and the photographic series is a finalist for the Photojournalism Prize 2026.
They live and work in Rome.
As sister and brother, we blend our differences to render the world in all its complexity: two gazes, one story.
